If Jesus is God as we emphatically state, then why did he come into our world? Was he afraid he might lose something if he did not visit? Was he lonely and came down to say hello? These questions may sound somewhat strange, but are they? When Jesus came into our world, he had an agenda:
Jesus came to bear witness of the truth
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. (Joh 1:17)
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (Joh 8:31-32)
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (Joh 14:6)
Jesus came in the flesh to be our mediator between God and man
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (1Ti 2:5)
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. (Heb 9:15)
Jesus came to be our new king
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. (Joh 18:36)
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. (Joh 18:37)
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. (Joh 18:38)
Jesus came to give us eternal life
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (Joh 3:16)
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (1Jn 5:11-12)
Jesus came to fix our sin problem
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom 6:23)
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) (Rom 5:17)
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1Jn 1:7)
Summary
These are just a few reasons why he came. Jesus left his home in heaven with the father and was born into this world for many more, but time will not suffice for us to cover them all. Here we stated just a few:
- To bear witness of the truth – In his day, his own people, the Jews, had become highly religious and faithless. They had basically forgotten the God of their fathers and were seeking, once again, their own way and utilizing their own “truths.”
- To be our mediator – Because of our fallen state, we can no longer have total fellowship with the God of heaven. We must have a mediator to intercede; otherwise, we are doomed forever. Jesus is the perfect mediator in that he is:
- 100% God and a member of the Godhead with full rights and priviledges
- 100% man and totally sinless
- To by our new king – Since the kingdom of Adam has fallen to sin, a new kingdom is necessary for those that choose it. A new kingdom requires a new king, and in this case he must be sinless and without spot or blemish (1 Peter 1:18) to be qualified. Jesus fills this role perfectly.
- To give us eternal life – His death was substitutionary in that he paid for our death sentence and at the same time, we obtained his life. Thanks to his atonement, we live, we live eternally, and we live abundantly. He sums it perfectly here:
- The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (Joh 10:10)
- Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. (Joh 14:19)
- To fix our sin problem – The problem with sin is that this sin condemned everything. Now that everything is condemned, everything will die. Therefore, a new heaven, a new earth, and a new kingdom are necessary to replace this one. Unfortunately, the sin debt needed to be paid but only a perfect sacrifice would suffice. Jesus became that perfect sacrifice on the cross. He can fix your sin problem too. Would you like to know how? Click here
